Sting Takes Home BMI Songwriting Award

Last night, October 5, Tuesday, the Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane hosted the annual BMI London Awards by Broadcast Music Incorporated, which honors not only this year’s best works in the music industry, but also works from music veterans that have made an impact and a lasting impression in the business.

The night’s important honorees were pop icon Sting and songwriter Don Black, OBE.  Sting was honored for his single “Every Breath You Take” which was performed ten million times since its release in the late ‘80s.  Other popular classics that were also aligned along with Sting’s single were “Yesterday” which was honored for its nine millionth performance, “Your Song” at eight million, “Save the Last Dance for Me”  at seven million renditions and performances, “Crocodile Rock”  at six million and “Baker Street” and “Candle in the Wind”  by Sir Elton John, tied at five million performances.

Black on the other hand was awarded with the highest honor for the night, the BMI Icon.  Previous recipients of the prestigious honor were Peter Gabriel, Ray Davies, Bryan Ferry and Van Morrison.

As for the night’s other honorees, Keith Urban’s “Only You can Love Me this Way” was honored with the BMI Robert S. Musel Song of the Year Award, “Evacuate the Dance Floor” from club hit maker Cascada was recognized with the BMI Dance Award while Jay Sean’s “Down” was honored as the BMI College Song of the Year.
