The Police Tour

The Police Extend Tour for PBS

The tour for the Police has been extended, however more concerts haven’t been added. Instead of the tour ending in Wantagh, NY on August 5, the band will be performing on August 7 in Madison Square Garden in a Public Broadcasting Service benefit for WNET and WLIW, metropolitan New York PBS stations.

The Police have stated that this is their last ever concert. On June 14, PBS viewers will have the opportunity for getting Garden concert tickets instead of the usual forms of give-aways for pledges such as tote bags, books, DVDs, CDs, mugs and other types of items. A donation of $5,000 will provide the donor with a VIP treatment that includes a dinner, sound check attendance and party. A pledge of $150 secures two tickets. It is unknown exactly how many tickets are available for each category. The two tickets will definitely go fast. The $75 price per ticket is the cheapest concert ticket for the Police already.

During the pledge drive that day, Sting, frontman and lead singer for the Police, will be interviewed and concert footage is also going to be shown.

Kathryn Schenker, manager for Sting told the New York Times, me and the business manager were talking one day about how we could end up making the final show special. We discussed the environment, then somehow public broadcasting was brought up.

With the farewell concert for the band booked on August 5 at Jones Beach, it seemed that it would end up being anti-climatic, Schenker added. We thought for the last show that it was important that we do something that was significant.

The public television donations isn’t unique. In the past other artists have done it.

In addition, the Police are donating $2 per ticket sold to the Million Trees initiative started by Michael Bloomberg, New York City’s mayor.
